Water & Hygiene

In Kenya today, 9.9 million people drink directly from contaminated surface water source and an estimated 5 million practice open defecation. Only 25% have access to handwashing facilities with soap and water at home.

Safe drinking water, basic sanitation and good hygiene practices are essential for the survival of children. Global evidence shows that better water, sanitation and hygiene could prevent the deaths of 297,000 children aged under five each year globally. Achieving universal access to drinking water and sanitation by 2030 will be challenging given current levels of investment, projected population growth and climate change.

Key needs in water and sanitation include improving access to clean water, especially in rural areas, enhancing sanitation infrastructure and services, promoting hygiene education, and addressing water scarcity and pollution challenges.

Additionally, ensuring sustainable management of water resources and increasing resilience to climate change are critical aspects of addressing water and sanitation needs in the country.  In Kenya, despite progress, there are still significant gaps in water and sanitation.

Rural areas often lack access to clean water sources, leading to health issues, impacting hygiene and contributing to increased infections. Urban areas face challenges like inadequate sewage systems and water pollution, affecting both health and the environment. The country struggles with high rates of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

Additionally, there are disparities in access between different socio-economic groups and regions, exacerbating inequalities. Efforts are underway to address these issues, but more investment, sustainable resources and practical solutions are needed for comprehensive improvement.

WENDO will contribute to an increase in access to potable water among vulnerable households and in the targeted communities.

The benefits will be as follows;

  • Gaining of knowledge of the community resource persons on water conservation and management.

  • Easy access to potable water to communities and schools through the charity activities.

  • It will create awareness on climate change in relation to water sources.

  • It will provide training and awareness on water catchments conservation.

  • It will educate the people on proper hygiene and sanitation practices.
