What Sets Us Apart
WENDO is more than an organisation, it's a promise kept. Born from the quiet determination of women who refused to turn away from the challenges facing their homeland, we have grown into a movement that is reshaping futures across Kenya.
Our name carries our purpose. WENDO formally stands for Women Empowerment Networking and Development Organisation, but its soul lives in two Kenyan languages.
In Kamba, wendo translates to love. In Luo, it means visitor. Together, these meanings define our approach: we come as respectful guests, and we stay as devoted partners.
How It All Began
The seeds of WENDO were planted in 2021, not in a boardroom, but in the hearts of three Kenyan women living far from home.
Virginia Saoke, Lavender Mwamba and Lilian Ochieng were each, independently, using their own earnings to keep vulnerable girls in Kenyan schools. They wrote cheques, paid fees, and offered support from thousands of miles away, all without fanfare or recognition.
But over time, a nagging question emerged. Why did the same families keep needing help? Why wasn't the support creating a permanent difference?
The answer was clear: charity alone could not break the cycle. Relief was temporary; transformation required something deeper. So the three women shifted their focus. Instead of asking how much more they could give, they asked how they could build something that would endure.
That conversation marked the turning point. The vision for WENDO began to take shape, not as a handout mechanism, but as a platform for lasting empowerment.
The Journey To Charitable Status
By 2023, what had begun as an informal network of giving had matured into a registered charity. WENDO was now a structured organisation with clear purpose, professional systems and a growing reputation for meaningful impact.
The years since have been marked by steady expansion. Our programmes now span education sponsorship, mentorship, community dialogue, advocacy and strategic collaborations. We've learned that sustainable change requires more than resources, it requires relationships built on trust and mutual respect.
