WENDO works with School Management Committees (SMCs) across Kenya to continuously assess schools and identify conditions that compromise the dignity of girls. These include inadequate sanitary facilities, absence of sanitary towel disposal bins, poor lighting and limited access to clean water.

Based on the specific needs of each hub, we support the implementation of dignity -enhancing projects in schools. These projects aim to create safer, healthier and more inclusive learning environments where girls feel respected, supported and empowered to thrive!

ThriveHubs

WENDO's vision is to transform schools into holistic development hubs where learners - especially girls - thrive academically, spiritually, emotionally and socially through faith-driven collaboration between education and faith communities.

We aim to strengthen collaboration between schools and faith communities to uphold dignity of girls, nurture learners' academic excellence, spiritual growth,  emotional wellbeing and social development. This is where we show you how our initiatives work and, more importantly, how we turn these words into action.

Through the school management committees (SMCs) WENDO identifies extremely vulnerable schoolgirls whose dignity and well-being are often compromised within the school environment. These vulnerabilities are often arising from household or personal challenges that are affecting their ability to learn and thrive.

We assess and respond to each girl's specific needs - whether at the household or individual level - through short- to medium-term support. This support includes the provision of school uniforms, payment of school fees, and access to personal hygiene and care items.

We are tailoring every intervention to suit each girls's unique situation. In some cases, we are providing direct assistance to the girl, while in others, we are supporting her family to ensure her educational and personal needs are being met.

WENDO coordinates with the school management committees to identify and designate safe spaces in and around schools, specifically for girls. These spaces serve as sanctuaries for menstrual emergencies, trauma healing, mental wellness and confidential discussions on issues affecting girls.

We are continuously improving, equipping and stocking these Thirve Girls' Spaces with essential items such as menstrual hygiene management (MHM) kits, seating materials (e.g. mats), stress relief tools, inspirational resources and art supplies. In schools where permanent space is unavailable, we set up temporary Thrive Spaces on designated days to ensure girls still have access to these vital services.

These spaces are playing a vital role in restoring dignity and promoting emotional well-being among girls. The spaces are helping reduce absenteeism linked to menstrual and mental health challenges, encouraging open dialogue and empowering girls to participate more confidently in school life.

'Dada'Nest

WENDO is building life and leadership skills among learners, especially those who are facing negative influences, such as vulnerable and disadvantaged youth in slums and culturally conservative areas. We identify and train volunteers on youth-focussed and gender-sensitive guidance, counselling, leadership and life skills who offer weekly sessions to equipping learners with practical tools for personal growth and resilience. To promote cross-cultural learning, we facilitate exchange programmes between learners in Kenya and the UK, both virtually and in-person.

With help of the school management committees, we identify hub alumni, both male and female, who are excelling in various fields. We host quarterly mentorship forums featuring alumni and professional volunteer mentors who inspire and guide the next generation of leaders.

Through life skills, mentorship and leadership development, WENDO is helping young learners, especially girls, build resilience, self-awareness and a sense of direction. These efforts are reducing vulnerability to negative influence, promoting peer support and fostering a culture of empowerment and inclusion within schools.

Mentor Bridge

WENDO focuses on mitigating gender-based violence (GBV), promotes trauma healing and enhances the overall mental wellness of learners to support their academic success. We equip volunteers with basic knowledge of youth-focussed GBV and mental heath, to identify and support learners experiencing trauma or emotional challenges. We organise and facilitate closed mental health and GBV forums every two weeks and open forums once a month for both parents and learners. To further promote emotional and mental wellbeing, we are coordinating context-appropriate activities such as yoga, nature walks and self-defence training for girls.

Through the activities, WENDO supports in creating emotionally safe and supportive school environments. By addressing mental health and trauma, WENDO is helping learners, especially girls, overcome barriers that hinder their academic and personal growth. These interventions are reducing the impact of gender-based violence, improving emotional resilience and fostering a culture of care and openness within schools.
