Kenya has made significant strides in achieving gender parity for entry into primary education, but the journey towards gender equality in education does not end there. The disparity becomes more pronounced in secondary and tertiary education, with fewer girls continuing their education due to socio-economic issues such as teenage pregnancies, early marriages, poverty, and lack of mentorship.
Additionally, cultural norms often prioritise educating boys over girls, as girls are expected to manage households while boys are seen as better suited for studying and securing jobs. This gap in education perpetuates gender inequalities and limits the opportunities available to women and girls.
WENDO is committed to bridging this gap by supporting women and girls in accessing and completing their education. Through funding programs for primary, secondary, and further education, WENDO aims to alleviate financial burdens that often hinder girls' education. By educating local communities and families on the importance of gender equality in education, we seek to change mindsets and create a supportive environment for girls' education. Providing school programs to reduce gender-based violence and combat gender stereotypes in the curriculum will create safer and more inclusive learning environments for girls.
Moreover, educating girls and boys on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and gender-based violence (GBV) will help shift societal norms and empower girls to make informed decisions about their bodies and future. Through these actions, WENDO aims to empower women and girls to break the cycle of poverty and achieve their full potential.
